Instructions

Make a pair of red and green signs to
resemble stoplights.

1. Gather the children together and read Red
Light, Green Light by Anastasia Suen.
2. After reading the book, talk with the
children about what happens in the book.
Explain why it is important for everyone to
follow traffic rules.
3. Show the children the red and green signs,
and hand out the various pictures to the children.
4. Have the children line up on all four sides of the room. Using the red
and green signs, have the children move safely across the room. Tell
them they have to pass those children going in the opposite direction
on the right-hand side.
5. After the children understand the basic principle of the activity, select
a child to use the red and green signs to direct traffic. Discourage the
children from having accidents.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
1. Can the children identify the colors on the signs and explain what they
mean in a traffic situation?
2. Can the children obey the traffic signals and take turns passing one
another safely from one side of the room to the other?
