Instructions

1. Before beginning this project, open cereal boxes at their seams and turn them
inside out, with the plain side facing out. Re-glue the seams and, if necessary,
tape the sides. Allow them to dry.
2. Have a discussion with the children about the different types of homes in
which people live, such as apartments, houses, trailers, and boats. Explain
that they will each make a home that looks like their own home.
3. Give a box to each child.
4. Ask the children what color the outside of their homes are and encourage
them to lightly color their box that color. They may choose to color just the
front of the box or all four sides.
5. If the child lives in an apartment, she may want to decorate it vertically. If she
lives in a house, she may want to decorate it horizontally. If she lives in a
trailer, she can add wheels to it.
6. Children may
choose to draw
windows and
doors or glue
cutout rectangles
and squares
on the box.
Encourage the
children to draw
other additions
on the house,
too.
7. Fold a piece of
brown construction
paper in
half vertically to
form a roof. Cut
it, if necessary,
and help the
child glue it in place.
8. Help children write the numbers of their address over their front doors.
