Instructions

1. Have a discussion with the children about their favorite colors.
2. Choose one color and look for it around the room. Note how every item is
the stated color, but not all are exactly the same. Discuss shades of color.
3. Pour one color of paint (green, blue, or purple) into three clear containers.
4. Mix white tempera paint into one container and black tempera paint into
another one. Leave the third container the same.
5. Compare the three different shades of the same color.
6. Look at paint sample cards that show dark and light shades of different colors.
7. Sort collage objects (see list) by color. Place objects of each color into ten
separate shoeboxes.
8. Ask each child to select his favorite color.
9. Encourage the children to create a collage. Each child will glue or staple
items from the box containing items of his chosen color onto a piece of
construction paper of the same color.

More to do
More Art: Put one color of paint at each easel, along with white and black paint
for mixing. Encourage the children to mix colors on a piece of paper by fingerpainting
or watch them blend where two colors meet on wet paper. Use an eyedropper
to drop colored water onto a coffee filter to mix colors.
