Instructions

1. Use a marker to divide the large poster board into 12 equal columns, one for each month of the year. Write the names of the months across the top of the chart, one in each column. Draw a black line under the names.

2. Give each child a circle of paper or a paper plate. Let them use the craft materials, crayons, markers, and colored pencils to create a self-portrait.

3. Ask each child when his birthday is. Have the correct information close at hand so you can give hints as needed.

4. Invite the children to place their self-portrait in the appropriate column. Start at the top of the chart and work toward the bottom.

5. When all of the children have had a chance to participate, ask them what the results of the chart are:* Which month has the most birthdays?* Which month has the fewest birthdays?* Which months have no (or zero) birthdays?* Which months have the same amount of birthdays?6. Print these interpretations on a piece of paper and post them under the chart.More to do Language and Literacy: Create a class birthday book by making one page for each month using card stock paper. Encourage the children to draw a small self-portrait on their birth-month page. Create a front and back cover, punch three holes in each page on the left-hand side, and bind the pages using heavy yarn.
