Instructions

* Fold the headband strips to 1 1/2" by 24".
* Unfold and press them flat.
Below the fold, write in
lowercase letters the names of
farm animals: sheep, turkey,
horse, donkey, goose, piglet,
and so on. Also consider
adding images of the animals.
What to Do
1. Ask each child to choose a farm animal. Give the children headbands and
magazines, child-safe scissors, and glue sticks. Demonstrate how to find the
first matching letter in a magazine, cut it out, and glue it on the headband
above the fold, directly above the handwritten letter.
2. Measure the headbands to fit each child and staple them at the appropriate
place.
3. Choose two children with matching headbands. Ask them to look at the other
children to find someone with the same animal name. Remind the pair to look
at each other's headbands to compare with the headbands of their friends.
Encourage them to look at the first letter of each name.
4. Continue finding all other matches, letting each child added find the next
member.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Working with one child at a time, set out several headbands for the child to
match.
* Can the children identify the animals on the headbands?
