digital timer

wooden blocks

chalk and chalk board or marker and chart paper

Instructions

1. Line the children up from one end of the classroom to the other. Ask the
children, "How long will it take you to pass this block from start to finish?"
After they answer, say, "Let's use a timer and find out!"
2. Hand the block to the first child as you start the timer and say, "Go."
3. The children pass the block from hand to hand. The last child drops the block
in a basket to stop the timer.
4. Show the children the numbers on the timer and write this number on a chalk
board or chart paper. Then ask them if they can move the next block faster!
5. After the group is working together smoothly, help the children count out a set
of up to 10 blocks. They can time their movement of the whole set of blocks,
and then try again to beat the clock.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip S
* This activity is best when the children are feeling alert and energetic. Other
objects such as plush toys or plastic eggs on spoons could also be used.
* The children will discover the need for teamwork. Without the cooperation of
every link in the chain, they won't be able to beat the clock.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Do the children work well as a team?
* Can the children pass the block to one another without dropping it?
