  1. Several bags of colored leaves
  2. Short-handled rakes
  3. Plastic storage bags
  4. Permanent marker

  1. Collect a few bags of autumn leaves. Spread the leaves around an outdoor area.
  2. Ask children to rake the leaves into a pile. Let the children jump into the pile and toss the leaves in the air, exploring how the leaves feel and sound.
  3. Give each child a plastic storage bag with his name written on it. Invite the children to collect leaves of different shapes and colors and put them in the bags.
  4. Discuss the different leaves and encourage the children to sort them according to size, shape, and color.
  5. If desired, let children glue their leaves to construction paper to create a collage or attach the leaves to a "tree" bulletin board.
