Instructions
1. Trace blocks onto white paper to create a pattern for children to duplicate.
2. Encourage the children to begin duplicating the block structure on TOP of the
paper, then duplicate it NEXT TO or IN FRONT OF the paper.
3. After the children have practiced copying the block patterns, explain to them
that real builders have to follow blueprints. Emphasize the complicated
features of a real blueprint that only plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and
other workers understand. If desired, show them a real building blueprint.
4. Trace blocks to make your own blueprint of a structure that the children will
build. Hang it in the Block Area and challenge children to construct a building
by following the block blueprint.
5. If children master this challenge, make blueprints that are smaller than actual
size to increase the difficulty level.
6. Challenge them to create their own blueprints for peers to build.
More to do
Math: Photocopy various classroom materials. Encourage children to duplicate
the photocopied sheet by arranging the actual materials on a blank sheet of
paper.
More Math: Add parquetry designs and blocks to the Construction Zone.
