Instructions

* Make a set of safari binoculars for yourself prior to this activity as an example
to show the children.
What to Do
1. Engage the children in a discussion about safaris. Talk about the different
animals the children might see on a safari.
2. Set out the various materials. Show the children your binoculars. Explain that
on safaris, people typically use binoculars to see the animals because it is
difficult to get close enough to see them clearly.
3. Help the children cut and glue their binoculars together. Encourage the
children to decorate their binoculars any way they wish.
4. When the glue dries, help the children punch holes in their binoculars and run
a length of string through the holes.
5. Set out the toy animals and invite the children to
watch them from
afar. Challenge
the children to
describe the
animals they see
quietly, so as not
to scare the animals off.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children have any difficulty making their binoculars?
* Can the children name the animals they saw on their safari?
