Instructions

1. When it is time for the children to line up for an activity (such as outside time, lunch, or field trips), ask all the children to sit quietly on the floor. Designate a spot for them to line up when it is their turn.2. Sing "Ten in the Class" as a fun way for the children to hear each other's names and participate in a gross motor activity before lining up.3. Sing a verse of the song for each child in the class when it is his time to line up. Decrease the number in the song to correspond to the number of children and change the gross motor activity for each child.4. Sing the song to the tune of "Ten in the Bed."There were ten in the classAnd the teacher said,"(insert child's name) stand up,and (insert gross motor activity) (repeat two more times).Line up, line up."5. For example, when it is Avery's turn to line up and there are only five children left on the floor, ask him to jump before he lines up. Sing, "There were five in the class and the teacher said, "Avery, stand up, and jump, and jump, and jump, and jump. Line up, line up.'"6. After the child completes the gross motor activity that was indicated in his verse, he can line up at the designated spot.More to doAlter the song for other transitional activities. For example, change the lineup verse to say wash up when it is time for the children to wash their hands for lunch.
