Objects around the room pictures from magazines strips of construction paper markers

Instructions

1. Hold up an object in the room, such as your sweater. Talk about the object. What does it look like? Is it big or little? What color is it? Is it soft or hard? Is it warm or cool? As each word is said, write it on a strip of construction paper with a marker.

2. Explain that these description words are all adjectives. Write "adjective" on the chalkboard.

3. Ask individual children to describe other objects, perhaps their own sweaters. As each new word is used, write it on a strip.

4. Place the strips of construction paper around the room. As children talk about things, ask them to select words and describe them. Keep adding new ones.

5. Later, perhaps the next day or week, introduce the children to new adjectives.
