Materials

Markers index cards or note cards small shoebox with lid scissors small objects (buttons, pompom balls, acorns)

Instructions

1. Write simple equations on separate index cards.

2. Cut two holes in the lid of the box approximately 2" apart. Print a plus sign between the holes.

3. Put small objects and a stack of cards by the box. A child holds up an equation card, and then counts and drops the amount shown into each hole. For example, if the equation is 2 + 2 = __, the child puts two objects in one hole and two in the other.

4. The child then removes the lid and counts how many objects are in the box to get the total amount.
