Instructions

1. In advance, draw 20 paper button counters on a piece of paper (make them actual button size if possible). Make a copy for each child.

2. Give each child a piece of plain paper and a copy of the button sheet.

3. Encourage the children to trace their hand on one side of the plain paper. This is the estimation side.

4. After they trace their hands, ask them to draw how many buttons they think will fit in the palm of their handprint. Show them a bowl containing one type of buttons so they can see the size.

5. After they have estimated, they turn over their paper and trace their hand again.

6. Ask the children to take a handful of buttons and count how many fit in the palms of their hands.

7. Have the children cut out the button counters from the button sheet and glue them on their hand outline.
