Instructions

1. Encourage the children to design, then cut out the top of a deciduous or evergreen tree from construction paper and glue it to the stick. Tape or glue one or two magnets about threequarters of the way up the tree.

2. Ask the children to make pictures of birds and/or butterflies using construction paper and crayons. These should be no bigger than about 4" (10 cm) long. Cut out the pictures and slide the paper clip over the middle of the bird or butterfly's body, or attach it to the head area.

3. Gradually move the tree closer and closer to the bird or butterfly until the magnet attracts the paper clip on the bird. You may need to tilt the tree slightly. Watch the bird or butterfly fly to the top of the tree.More to doArt: Let the children create butterflies out of many types of materials: fabric, noodles, felt, clay, paints, etc.
