Materials

One feather Paper and marker3" (7.5 cm) Styrofoam ball Rubber ball

Block of wood Rock

Hand-held cardboard or paper fan, one for each child

Instructions

1. Place the feather on a hard surface, such as a table.

2. Ask the children to predict how many times they will have to wave the fan to move the feather across the table.

3. Record the predictions on paper.

4. Let the children wave the fans to produce air.

5. Repeat this process, using the balls, the block and the rock.

6. Ask open-ended questions about the process.

7. Discuss wind and air with the children.More to doMovement: Staple two tissue paper strips, each about 1' (30 cm) long, to a tongue depressor.Put on some music and let the children dance with their streamers. Let them know that the streamers are moving because the children are moving the air as they dance.
