Instructions

1. During a transition time, peek at the label inside each child's shirt. Never
mention which designer/store made the clothes; this conveys improper
values to your class and could make some children feel left out.
2. Instead, read the size, the fabric content, or country of manufacture on each
label. Often a three-year-old may be wearing a size 4 or 6 shirt. This makes
them feel so big! If a three-year-old is wearing a size 3, your comment could
be, "This shirt is just the perfect size for you!" or "Shirley also has a size 3 on
today!"
3. If you read the fabric content on each label, you could then group the class
according fabric (cotton, polyester, and so on). You could discuss the source
of various fabrics and how they are produced, and discuss the attributes of
each type. For example, cotton breathes, polyester dries quickly and doesn't
wrinkle, linen has a pleasant texture, and so on.
4. If you note the country of manufacture, this could lead to geography and
economics lessons and map reading.
Author's Note: Once you start doing this activity with your class, most likely
they will ask you to do it every day!
