Instructions

1. Beforehand, trace various vegetables on white paper (see illustration).

2. Trace the pan pattern (see illustration) on a piece of long paper or on two papers, adding an extra strip for gluing together.

3. Tear out vegetable pages from catalogs for the children to use.

4. Before doing the activity, discuss parts of various vegetables that we eat such as: corn (seeds), beets (root), celery (stalk), and tomato (fruit of plant). Discusshow vegetables are grown by a farmer, then transported to canning or freezing plants, and then trucked to a store. Show pictures or posters of vegetables.

5. Ask each child to choose at least four vegetables. Younger children can cut out catalog pictures of vegetables; older children can cut out vegetable patterns.

6. Let them color the vegetables with crayons or paint with watercolors.

7. Cut out a pan for each child and fold. If desired, the children can color their pans.

8. Ask the children to glue together the handles and three sides to form a pocket. Make sure they do not glue the top of the pan. Staple the fold.

9. Encourage them to place their vegetables into their pans.

10. Ask each child to bring in a vegetable. Cut them up and make vegetable soup for lunch or snack.
