Instructions
1. Take the children to the school library. Explain that they will help set up a
book return desk in the classroom.
2. Cut paper into 26 small squares (2" x 2") and write a letter of the alphabet on
each square. Choose 26 books from your class library, stick a letter of the

alphabet on each book using contact paper, and place the books in
alphabetical order on the table ("library return desk").
3. Write the letters of the alphabet on chart paper and hang it close by so
children may refer to it.
4. Encourage the children to borrow books and return them to their
appropriate alphabetical spot on the table. If the children need extra help
putting them in the correct spot, mark the location on the table
with matching letters (use 2" x 2" pieces of paper and
contact paper).
5. This is also great for
children who need
practice with numbers.
Just replace the letters
on the books with
numbers. Choose a quantity
of books that matches or
challenges the skill levels of
your group.
