Materials

  • Bulbs for paper whites, one for each child
  • Clear plastic cups
  • Stones or marbles
  • Water
  • Ruler, Unifix blocks or Cuisinaire rods
  • Chart with each child's name labeled

What to do

1. Place a scoop of stones or marbles in each cup, and place a bulb on top of the stones.

2. Add water to cover the stones and the bottom of the bulb, and place the cup in a sunny location where it will not be disturbed.

3. After the bulbs have sprouted, ask the children to measure their growth and record the results on the chart.

More to do

  • Art: Cut flower shapes out of sponges. Let the children paint a bouquet with flower prints.
  • Science: Plant bulbs outdoors in the fall, so in spring the children can find the sprouts.
