What to do
1. To prepare, cut the colored paper into a wide assortment of shapes and sizes. Leave some paper
for the children to cut themselves.
2. Distribute the white paper and encourage the children to create an imaginary pet by arranging
the colored shapes on their paper. Let them cut additional shapes if they choose.
3. When the children have finished their arrangement, help them glue the colored shapes in
place.
4. Have the children choose a name for their pet. Write the name on their picture.
More to do
Circle time: Talk about the pets that the children have at home, including the children's responsibilities
toward the pet and the ways in which the pet contributes to the family. Invite parents to
bring small, friendly pets to class for a visit or have the children bring in photos. Invite a veterinarian
or representative from an animal shelter to talk to the children.
Math: Make a picture graph of the children's pets or pets they would like to own.
