Materials

Large sheet of butcher paper

Felt pens, paints and brushes, crayon or chalk

Sunny day outside

4 rocks, optional

Instructions

What to do
1. Go for a walk looking for shadows on the ground.
2. Find a shadow that is appealing in design.
3. Place the large sheet of butcher paper on the shadow. Adjust the paper so the shadow is captured
on the paper.
4. If the day is windy, place a rock on each corner of the paper to keep it from blowing away.
5. Using any choice of drawing or painting tools, trace, outline, color in, or decorate the paper
using the shadow as the design.
6. When complete, remove the paper and observe the shadow drawing.
More to do
More art: Cut the design out and glue it on another sheet of paper contrasting in color. Make a
shadow drawing of a friend's shadow. When using crayon, place textured surfaces behind the
paper to add design to the shadow drawing. A wire mesh screen, sheet of plywood, bumpy scrap
of vinyl flooring, or scrap of Formica make interesting textures.
