Materials
sandpaper
rocks (small enough to be held in a child's palm, but larger than a pebble)
small container or box
glue
paper
Instructions
1. Place the materials in the designated learning center. Let the children
explore the materials independently.
2. Present a magic show. Without the children seeing, place one of the items
inside the large hat.
3. Wave a "magic wand" over the hat and say a few words of encouragement,
such as "abracadabra," and begin making the targeted initial sound.
4. Encourage the children to repeat the targeted sound.
5. Ask, "What do you think is hidden inside the hat? It's something that starts
with the sound /p/."
6. As the children guess, acknowledge their answers focusing on the initial
sound. When the appropriate answer is given, say, "Poof! A pookah!"
Note: Explain to the children that a "pookah" is an invisible giant white rabbit
that likes to make mischief in folk tales.
