Hot dog slices, apple slices, cheese pieces, and grapes

Instructions

1. Cut open both ends of a few large appliance boxes. Leave the flaps attached,
if possible.
2. Place the boxes on their sides, end to end.
3. Form a tunnel by putting the flaps of one box inside the flaps of another and
securely taping them together.
4. After the children have explored the tunnel for a while, add another box or
two to make the tunnel longer.
5. For more adventure, cut a hole into one side of the tunnel and tape another
box or tunnel at a right angle to the first tunnel.
More to do
Art: Give the children plain paper and ask them to draw a picture of something
that might be in a tunnel. Give each child a piece of black construction paper
that is at least 4" (10 cm) wider than the plain paper. Help the children staple
together the two papers along one long edge, then arch the black paper above
the plain paper and staple together the two remaining long edges. This forms a
black tunnel over the picture on the plain paper. The children will enjoy peering
into each other's tunnels to see what is inside.
Blocks: Add oatmeal boxes, salt boxes, or any other boxes with both ends
removed to the Block Area. Children can use these boxes to make tunnels for toy
cars, trucks, and trains.
Song
With the children, sing the following song while they are crawling in the tunnel
(Tune: "Ten Little Indians").
Crawling, crawling, we are crawling.
We are crawling in our tunnel.
Crawling, crawling, we are crawling.
Crawling to the end.
