Instructions
* Place the books on display in the reading area.
* Set materials for making collages in the art area.
What to Do
1. Show the books to the children during circle or group time. Explain that an
author named Eric Carle liked to write stories about insects. Ask the children
to identify "same" and "different" qualities among the books.
2. Talk with the children about the different insects that appear in each of Carle's
books. Ask the children to describe the physical characteristics of each insect.
3. Explain to the children that Eric Carle made pictures for his stories by cutting
and pasting colorful papers together. This type of artwork is called a "collage."
4. Read a different title each day.
5. Direct the children to move to the art area after they hear the story to design
their own collages.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children understand that all of Eric Carle's books were written by a
single author?
* Can the children name one or more of the bugs that Eric Carle writes about?
