Instructions

1. Tell the children that the people and animals in books are called characters.
Book characters are our friends because we enjoy reading stories! Explain that
when we have family and friends who we love, we often enjoy looking at
pictures of them.
2. Explain to the children that they will make pictures of their story friends to
decorate the outside of the classroom door.
3. Cut white drawing paper into 4" (10 cm) squares and construction paper into
5" (12 cm) squares.
4. Help each child glue a square of drawing paper on top of a square of construction
paper. The larger construction paper square forms a "frame."
5. Brainstorm a list of favorite book characters. You may want to prepare a list
ahead of time to prompt children if they need more suggestions. (Make sure
to write down many more characters than there are children in the class.)
6. Ask each child to select a book character and draw it on a paper square. If
possible, have sample books available so children can look at their characters
before or as they are drawing. Encourage them to draw the character anyway
they choose, and tell them it is wonderful to be creative and original.
7. Help the artists sign their pictures. Add the character's name and the book
title(s) in which the character appears.
8. Display the characters on the outside of the classroom door or on a bulletin
board with the caption: "Book Characters We Love!"
