Materials

puppets (10 if possible)

number cards

safety pins or yarn and paper punch

large cardboard box or puppet theatre

number chart

Instructions

* Pin or tie one number card to the front of each puppet.
* Display the box on a table.
* Display the puppets and number chart near the box.
What to Do
1. Invite small groups of children to select a puppet and put on a puppet show for
a group of their classmates.
2. Children can sit behind the box as they manipulate the puppets.
3. Invite the puppets to talk with one another about their numbers and refer to
the number chart in their conversations.
4. Encourage the children to use their puppets to count objects or describe the
number they hold.
5. When the first group is finished, the children in the audience can applaud after
which another small group of children can put on another puppet show.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* If you do not have puppets, make simple sock puppets. Use permanent
markers to add two eyes to each sock, then attach the number card and
proceed as directed above.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Display the number chart. Can each child manipulate a puppet as she
identifies each number on the chart?
* Can the children describe the numbers once they identify them?
