items from nature (pinecones, leaves, sticks, rocks, and so on)

small buckets with handles (one for each child)

poster board

glue

markers

Instructions

1. Ask parents to contribute tapes or CDs that are representative of their
cultures, explaining that they will be used to begin building awareness
of the different sounds and rhythms of music.
2. Play music for a short time each day.
3. Involve children by holding them and moving them around or swaying
with them to the beat of the music. Encourage toddlers to move and
bounce with you.
4. Provide older children with scarves and streamers to wave and sway to
the rhythm of the music.
