Materials

Grocery bag, box, or other item with an opening big enough for an adult hand to reach inside

clothing items, such as a mitten, watch, bracelet, glove, hat, belt, swimsuit, shoe, bib, tie, and so on

Instructions

1. In preparation, you may wish to decorate the bag or box to make it more
enticing.
2. Ask a group of no more than eight children to sit in a circle around you.
3. Show the children the Mystery Box or Bag and tell them that there are pieces
of clothing inside. You may wish to display the articles before starting,
especially the first time.
4. The children will take turns reaching in, and without looking, trying to guess
the one item that they grab. (You may wish to have an adult demonstrate this
activity first.)
5. After the child has chosen an item and revealed it, an adult might ask, "On
what part of the body do you wear this item?" "What time of the year do you
wear this item?"
6. Give each child a turn finding an item.
7. A variation of this activity might be for the child to describe with three clues
what she feels inside the bag or box so the rest of the children can guess what
the item is.
