Accordion Photo Album

Materials:

  • 6 photos of child
  • 8 unruled 4"x6" index cards
  • colored pencils
  • glue
  • clear packing tape
  • black marker
  • ribbon

Make Your Great Gift

  1. Choose six photos for the photo album.
  2. Use colored pencils to decorate two index cards.
  3. Glue each photo to an undecorated index card.
  4. Lay the eight index cards on a table with the pictures and pencil drawings face down. Place the cards so that the longer sides are touching end to end. Make sure that one decorated card is on each end of the row and the photo cards are in the middle.
  5. Use clear packing tape to secure all of the ends together on the backs of the cards. Then turn the row of index cards over, and secure the front ends with tape. Fold the cards back and forth, accordion style, with the pencil drawings showing outward on the front and back cards.
  6. Write a short message or greeting to the recipient of the photo album inside the front card.
  7. Tie a ribbon around the photo album.

Helpful Hints:

  • To protect the photo album, laminate or cover it with clear contact paper. Do not use heavy laminating because the cards will not fold.
  • Write why the photo is important to you on the back of the corresponding index card.

"Say Cheese" Flowers

Make someone smile with these card stock flowers featuring the child's photos

Materials:

  • Various colors of card stock or recycled cardboard scraps (e.g. cereal or cracker boxes), cut into flower shapes
  • Crayons or markers
  • Small photo of child
  • Green pipe cleaners
  • Clear tape
  • Glue
  • Card stock, 1 full sheet

Before Beginning: Cut card stock into 4"x4" flower shapes

Make Your Great Gift

  1. Decorate at least three or four flower shapes with crayons or markers
  2. Choose one of the flowers, and glue the photo in the center of it.
  3. Tape green pipe cleaners to the backs of the flowers to create stems.
  4. Decorate a whole sheet of card stock with crayons or markers.
  5. Roll the piece of card stock into a funnel shape, and secure with clear tape.
  6. Place the flowers inside the card stock funnel to create a beautiful bouquet. Be sure the photo is clearly visible.

Helpful Hints:

  • Use a large flower-shaped cookie cutter as a pattern for creating the flower shapes.
  • Instead of card stock, use index cards, poster board, or cardboard scraps for the flowers.

Colorful Wall Hanging

Create a unique and long-lasting picture using fabric, a frame, and oil pastels

Materials:

  • Muslin or other cotton fabric (beige or white)
  • Scissors
  • Nontoxic oil pastels
  • Food coloring
  • Paintbrushes
  • Small frames, glass removed
  • String of yarn
  • Clear tape

Before Beginning: Precut fabric 2" wider than the frames purchased. Put a few drops of food coloring into a bowl of water for each color desired.

Make Your Great Gift

  1. Draw a picture or design on the fabric using oil pastels.
  2. Paint over the top of the picture using the food coloring-water mixture.
  3. Allow fabric to dry.
  4. Pull the fabric tightly around the frame's cardboard insert or backing. Tape edges of the fabric to the back of the frame backing. Then, place the fabric-covered backing into the frame and secure with tape, if needed.
  5. Trim excess fabric from edges.
  6. Tape a loop of string to the back of the frame to form a hanger.
