Materials

Paper plates

scissors

rolls of 1"-wide ribbon

colored tissue paper cut into 3" squares

white glue

small cups

Instructions

1. Beforehand, cut two slits in each paper plate as shown below. The slits should
be opposite of each other and 1" from the edge of the plates.
2. Give each child a plate and a long piece of ribbon.
3. Show the children how to weave the ribbon through one of the slits, push it
through the back, and come up through the other slit to make a basket
handle.
4. Demonstrate how to find the middle of a square of tissue paper, twist it, and
dip it in the cup of glue.
5. Encourage the children to fill the middle of their plates this way, using a
variety of colors.
6. When the tissue flowers are done, help the children tie the ribbon into a bow
at the top of their basket.
7. Tell the children to surprise someone with the basket on May first,
"May Day."
