Instructions

* Display an assortment of plastic cups upside down around the border of one
or two tables. Leave 1' to 2' of space between cups.
* Place a plastic insect beneath each cup.
* Create an insect wand by attaching stickers or plastic insects to a wooden
dowel or paint stirring stick. Glue a larger paper insect to the end of the
wand.
What to Do
1. Include this activity as part of your daily good morning routine.
2. Begin by saying good morning to the children in the class.
3. As the children respond with "good morning," pick up the insect wand.
4. Tell the children that it's time to say "good morning" to the insects in your
classroom as well.
5. Walk around the circle area and lightly tap each child on the shoulder
signaling that it's their turn to say good morning to the insects at the table.
6. As the children are tapped on the shoulder, they may go up and walk in the
designated direction around the table(s) to peek at each insect beneath each
cup and say "good morning."
7. Encourage the children to identify each insect and say the insect name in their
greeting: "Good morning, Mr. Cricket," "Good morning, Ms. Caterpillar," and
so on.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children name the individual insects?
* Can the children describe the differences between the various insects?
