Materials

Green, red, yellow, black, and orange tempera paints

Pie pans or paint trays

Smocks

White construction paper, 12" x 18" (30 cm x 45 cm)Towels or diaper wipes

Small paintbrushes

Instructions

1. Ahead of time, pour the paint into pans or trays, one for each color.

2. Ask the children to put their smocks on before the project begins.

3. Invite the children to place their forearm in the green paint, without touching the paint withtheir hands; then have them press their forearm onto the white construction paper about threeor four times, creating a row of flower stems.

4. When they have finished the stems, ask the children to place their hand in the orange, red, andyellow paints one at a time. Have them press their handprint at the top of each flower stem,holding their fingers together and their thumb above the paper, creating the tulip impression.Wipe or wash hands after each color.

5. Add the pistols using the small brush and black paint.More to doMath: Play a tulip counting game with tulips constructed from paper and craft stick stems. Thechildren count the correct number of tulips and place them in laminated file folders that are decoratedwith a numbered flower pot.More art: In the spring, put a vase of fresh tulips on a table and invite the children to create a stilllifedrawing.
