Instructions

Directions for Making the Feely Can
1. Remove both ends of the coffee can. Use a metal file to smooth any rough
edges.
2. Cover the can with self-adhesive plastic. Place the plastic lid on one end of
the can.
3. Stretch the cut end of the sweater sleeve to fit over the other end of the can
and attach it with duct tape.
4. Remove the lid and add objects to the can. Change categories occasionally to
keep the activity interesting.
Procedure:
1. Encourage the child to reach through the sleeve to feel an object.
2. Before removing her hand, ask the child to identify the object.
3. The child removes the object through the sleeve, to see if she was correct.
4. Repeat with the other children.
More to do
Language: Encourage the children to describe the textures of the objects, such as
hard, soft, round, sharp, pointed, cold, rough, and smooth.
Math: When all objects have been identified, ask the child to remove the plastic
lid and count them as she drops them into the can.
