Instructions

1. Talk about the 1950's with the children. Talk about the music,
dances, fashion, and so on. Tell them they will be having a
1950's style hop!
2. Make "45s" (records) with the children. Cut out 5" diameter
circles from black construction paper and cut out the middle
(about 1" diameter) of each circle.
3. Teach the children the "twist" and other "50's dances (there
are videos that you can watch ahead of time so you
can teach these dances). Play music from the
1950's songs for the
children to dance to.
4. Help the children
make poodle skirts
and initial shirts. To make a
poodle skirt, cut a large circle
from pink felt (as shown in the
illustration), cut out the middle
(big enough for a child's waist),
and cut it apart. Sew Velcro where the
closure will be. Help the children trace pre-cut
poodles on black and white felt. The
children cut out the poodles and
glue them to their skirts. To finish,
glue craft cord to make a leash for
their poodle.
5. Make initial shirts with the children Give each
child a pre-cut felt initial (the first letter of the
child's name) to glue onto the front of a Tshirt
as shown.
6. Provide scarves for the girls to tie
around their necks.
7. Serve "cherry smashes," a popular
drink from the "50's. Let each put
two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a cup, fill the cup with red soda, and top
with whipped topping and a cherry.
