Large chart paper paint paintbrushes paint smocks newspaper markers

Instructions

1. Ahead of time, prepare two large charts with the numerals 0-10 in a vertical line down the left side of each paper. Space them widely enough for the correct number of handprints to be placed to the right of each numeral.

2. Hang the charts on the wall near the floor, placing newspaper underneath. Ask the children to put on paint smocks. Discuss how many handprints should be next to each numeral.

3. Paint one child's hand at a time, carefully guiding the child's arm in placing the handprint next to the correct numeral. Repeat until both charts have one print for numeral one, two prints for numeral two, and so on. Let them dry.

4. Cut one dry chart into numeral strips with the corresponding number of handprints. Display the uncut chart on the wall, low enough so that the children can match the strips to the uncut numeral chart.
