Instructions
1. Show the children the balance scale and explain how it works. Demonstrate
how two objects of equal weight can be balanced if the balancing point is in
the center. Also show how several small blocks can balance a large block
with the point in the center, and then, show how a single small block can
balance a large block if the balancing point is moved closer to the big block.
2. After several demonstrations (testing the children's suggestions), place the
scale, blocks, and household objects in the Construction Zone for independent
exploration.
More to do Gross Motor: Attach a length of yarn to the floor (or use a balance beam, if
available) and encourage children to balance on the line and walk along from
one end to the other. Challenge them to try different poses and styles of
walking.
