Materials

Tag board in silver or pastel shades

Scissors

Crayons or markers

Pipe cleaners in black and pastel shades

Instructions

1. Before class, cut wings from tag board. The wings should be cut on a fold.

2. Encourage the children to decorate the wings with crayons or markers. Show the children picturesof butterflies and point out that the design on the wings is symmetrical.

3. Give each child one black and one pastel-colored pipe cleaner. Help the children twist the pipecleaners together and roll one end to form a head.

4. Puncture a hole in the wing and weave one-half of the pipe cleaner through the opening. Makea loop with two halves of another pipe cleaner where the child can insert her finger.More to doCircle time: Have a discussion about ponds, the dragonfly's favorite habitat. Introduce new words,such as insects, cattails, marsh, pond, wings.Music: Listen to a piece of classical music and invite the children to mimic the flight of the dragonflyin dance.
