Materials

Clipboards

White or manila paper, 8" x 12" (20 cm x 30 cm)Crayons or markers in assorted colors

Music recordings in various styles, tempos, rhythms, and moods such as "Fantasia," "Saint Saen's

Carnival of the Animals," Irish ballads, and Latin music

Instructions

1. Have each child find a place in the room where she can draw and not disturb other children.Provide the children with clipboards, if necessary.

2. Supply the children with paper and crayons or markers.

3. Play a selection of music.

4. Encourage the children to listen to the music and let their crayons dance, or draw and color, tothe rhythm; their drawings will reflect what the music makes them feel. Reassure the childrenthat there is no right or wrong interpretation.

5. After a few minutes, put on a new selection.

6. When the new selection begins, tell the children they may continue working on the same drawingor begin a new one.More to doMore art: Do the same exercise using different media such as clay, paint, or pastels. Share the children'sdrawings with the other children and invite the others to guess which music was playing.Movement: Play a variety of music selections and encourage the children to dance and move.Music: Listen to a recording such as "Peter and the Wolf" where the story is conveyed through themusic. Supply the children with instruments and encourage them to create a story or retell afamiliar one.
