Instructions
Set up a corner store in the classroom so it resembles a real grocery store.
1. Read Supermarket by Kathleen Krull and Melanie Hope Greenberg with the
children. Discuss the story with the children. Talk about the importance of
grocery stores, and how all communities have them.
2. Point out the corner store set up in the classroom. Invite the children to
explore the store and role-play the various positions in the store, from
customer to cashier.
- Ask local grocery stores if they will allow you to take a "behind the scenes"
field trip to their store. The children will enjoy seeing where trucks are
unloaded and where the food is stored before it is displayed.
Sing:
The Grocery Store by Jackie Wright
(Tune: "Here We Go "Round the Mulberry Bush")
This is the way we buy our food,
Buy our food, buy our food.
This is the way we buy our food
In the corner grocery store.
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
1. Do the children understand the importance a local grocery store has for the
community?
2. Can the children correctly identify various foods or items in the grocery store?
