Materials

Plastic or wooden hula hoops with stands, cardboard blocks set up with a top to

crawl under, or commercial play equipment with circle opening

Instructions

1. As part of a unit on fire safety, tell the children that if their house is on fire, they should crawl close to the ground to get away from the smoke above. 2. Encourage the children to crawl one by one under the "smoke" (hula hoop, block "tunnel" or play equipment). This could be part of an obstacle course. 3. Use in connection with "Stop, drop, and roll" practice. This could be a lifesaving activity. 4. This is great to set up as a demonstration if the fire department visits the class.
