Materials

Water

Food coloring

Small bowls

Sturdy paper towels

Newspaper

Old-fashioned clothespins

Pipe cleaners, one per child

Markers

Instructions

1. Mix water and food coloring in small bowls.

2. Show the children how to fold their paper towel in half four times.

3. Have the children dip the corners of the folded towel into the bowls of coloring, then helpthem squeeze the excess water into a spare container.

4. Ask them to carefully unfold the towel and lay it on newspaper to dry.

5. When the towels have dried, have the children gather the mid-section of the towel. Grasp thetowel with the clothespin.

6. Have the children attach the pipe cleaner as antennae and create a face using markers.More to doMore art: Make caterpillars from egg cartons and cocoons from toilet paper tubes. Hide the children'sbutterflies in the cocoons, then have the butterflies emerge in a special celebration. Makecaterpillar magnets using clothespins, pompoms, and googly eyes.
