Materials

Yarn, cord and blunt needle Tape

Dry cereal Pipe cleaners

Pine cones Peanut butter

Solid shortening, such as Crisco Birdseed

Fruit and berries Popcorn

Bird identification books

Instructions

1. Cut lengths of yarn and wrap the ends with tape. Let the children string dry cereal and then tie the ends of the yarn together.

2. Twist pipe cleaners around pinecones to make a handle. Mix together half peanut butter and half shortening. (Birds need fat to stay warm. Peanut butter needs to be mixed with solid shortening so their beaks don't stick.) Spread this mix on the pine cones. Roll them in birdseed.

3. Using a blunt needle and cord, thread fruit, popcorn and berries.

4. Decorate an outdoor tree or bush that you can observe from inside with these bird treats.
