Materials

Newspapers Shallow pan of water

Different colored chalk (sidewalk chalk is best) Manila or ditto paper cut into shapes, if desired

Children's scissors

Instructions

1. Prepare the area by spreading out newspapers and filling the shallow pan with water.

2. Show children how to hold chalk over the water and use the scissors to scrape the different colored chalk so the dust floats on top.

3. Keep scraping chalk until you have many colors floating on top of the water. Three or four children may scrape at one time.

4. Take the manila or ditto paper and lay it gently on top of the water. Do not push it under!5. Pick it up carefully and you have a print. Allow to dry. Four or five prints may be made before it is necessary to change the water (all the chalk dust goes to the bottom as you put the paper on).More to doMore art: This project can be adapted to any season or holiday by cutting the paper into appropriate shapes. For example, at Easter, the paper could be cut into egg or bunny shapes and for spring or summer projects into flowers.
