Materials

  • Stuffed animal, pet, or familiar person

To Do

  1. When there are several very familiar people, pets or toys with names in the room, ask the child, "Where's Teddy (or whoever)?"
  2. Clap and show approval if the child indicates correctly.

Observations

See if the child looks toward or points to the correct individual or thing.

More Ideas

Do this at various times when different individuals are present.

As the child gets older and develops more language skills, make your questions more complex and include a wider range of objects. "What's that noise coming from ?" "Where'sthe garbage truck?"

Emerging Skill

The child demonstrates understanding and strengthens social ties as she recognizes the names of familiar people and a few familiar objects.
