Jar Lid Puzzles

  • Fiberboard or other thin board, or stiff cardboard--2 pieces the same size (about 12" or 30 cm square)
  • Skill saw and sandpaper or Exacto knife if using cardboard
  • Jar lids
  • Pencil
  • Wood glue

To Make

  1. Place the jar lid in the middle of one of the pieces of board.
  2. Trace around it with a pencil.
  3. Using the saw or Exacto knife, cut out that circle so that the jar lid will fit comfortably inside the circle. Sand any rough edges.
  4. Glue the two pieces of board together.
  5. When dry, place the jar lid inside the circle.

To Do

Let the child lift out the jar lid and put it back in the circle again.

Does the child sometimes invert the lid when he puts it in?

Glue matching pictures inside the jar lid and inside the circle on the board to make a simple matching game.

Use two or three different sizes of jar lids and cut corresponding holes in the board, so the child must be aware of size as well.

Emerging Skill

The child relates the positive and negative spaces, and practices fine motor skills.
