Instructions

* Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
1. Let the children experiment and play with measuring cups and spoons in
tubs of water to become familiar with them. As they are working, discuss
the different measuring items, such as cups and teaspoons.
2. Before Mother's Day, discuss with the children all the ways their mothers
(or other special person) help them. Mention that one of the things their
moms might do for them is cook food. Explain that they will be making
their own cookbooks to give to their moms for Mother's Day.
Note: Be sensitive to the fact that some children may not have a mother.
Be sure to mention other special people in the children's lives, such as
grandmothers.
3. Individually ask each child what her mom's favorite food is. Then
encourage the child to tell you the recipe for that food, as best as she
can. Write down exactly what each child says.
4. Assemble all of the recipes into a cookbook. Design the cover together
as a class.
5. Make copies of the cookbook for each child to give his or her mom.
Mothers will treasure this forever!
More to do Art: Make a classroom "quilt" for the bulletin board. Ask each child to draw
a picture of her favorite food on a 4" x 4" square of paper. Glue each of their
pictures to a 5" x 5" square of construction paper. Attach the squares to a
bulletin board or a wall in the shape of a quilt. Title it, "Our Favorite Foods!"
