Materials

Jackets, mufflers, boots, etc. Construction paper

Markers or crayons Scissors

Fabric strips, 24" x 1" (60 cm x 2.5 cm)

Instructions

1. Talk to the children about winter. Ask how people change their activities in the winter months(e.g., spend more time inside, do winter sports, eat hot soups and stews, wear winter clothing).Give children items to try on such as jackets, mufflers, boots.

2. Invite the children to draw pictures on 12" x 18" (30 cm x 50 cm) construction paper ofthemselves dressed for outdoor winter play, leaving off the scarf or muffler so they can add itlater with fabric. The pictures should be large and fill the paper.

3. Each child then chooses a fabric muffler to add to his self-portrait. Using scissors, make avertical slit in the paper on each side of the neck and insert the fabric strip through openings.Trim if necessary. The child can tie in front and fringe the ends.
