Materials
Wood blocks
Bell
Slide Whistle

What to do

  1. Introduce each sound at a different location in the room, such as wood blocks at the bell on the rug and whistle at the slide.
  2. Gather children in the center of the room.
  3. Make a sound with one of the instruments. Children should go to the area of the room associated with that sound.
  4. Make another sound. Children should move to the new location.
  5. When children can do this easily, increase the difficulty by hiding the objects you use to make the sounds so there are no visual cues. Use three closely related objects, for example, three bellswith different tones, three different rhythms played on a drum and three different melodies on a piano.

    More to do
    Movement:
Match sounds to colors and then ask everyone wearing yellow to line up, sit down, etc. when you ring the bell.
Instead of using three different room locations, associate three different movements, such as jumping, spinning and sitting, with the sounds.
Music: use rhythms, sounds or songs to signal transitions such as clean-up, line-up and snack time.
