2" (5 cm) square pieces of animal "skin" samples; wallpaper, cloth samples like fake fur, reptile print, fish scales, lobster shell, chamois, leather, freathers, pieces of tree bark.
Glue
Pictures of animals
Cardboard pieces, 4" x 6: (10 cm x 15 cm)
Pictures of fruits and vegetables

What to do

  1. Glue the skin samples onto the cardboard, one per piece.
  2. Cut out pictures of whole animals, and glue them on cards, again, one per piece.
  3. Ask the children to match the skin samples with the cards of the whole figures.

More Science:
Ecourage the children to categorize skin sample cards by common characteristics: soft, smooth, rough, etc.

  • Have a magnifying glass available to observe sample cards and children's own skin.
