Materials needed

  • Pieces of flannel (orange, green, white, red, yellow, tan, brown)
  • Scissors
  • Fabric paints
  • Patterns of a pumpkin, onion, carrot, cabbage, ear of sweet corn and green beans
  • Vegetables (corresponding to the vegetable patterns)

What to do

  1. Cut the vegetable pictures from pieces of flannel using the patterns and decorate using fabric paints. Let dry at least four hours.
  2. During circle time show and talk about the fresh vegetables and the vegetable pictures made of flannel with the children.
  3. Use the flannel board while singing the following song, "Vegetables," to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

We are pumpkins, big and round,
Big and round, big and round.
We are pumpkins, big and round,
    Seated on the ground.

We are string beans, green and fine....
    Growing on a vine.

We are onions, round and white....
We make soup taste just right.

We are carrots, orange and long....
    Help us sing this song.

We are cabbage, green or red....
    See our funny head.

We are ears of corn, tall and straight....
    Don't we taste just great!

  4. Repeat the song and encourage the children to sing along. Make the flannel board and vegetable pictures available during play time.

More to do
